This location was simplified last year for easier use. The four GUI programs BibDesk, LaTeXiT, TeX Live Utility, and TeXShop are at the top level, and a small number of documents and spelling programs are in a folder named Docs and Spell Utilities. MacTeX is a TeXLive distribution modified especially for use on Mac OSX. It will install every thing you need to run ConTeXt, TeX, LaTeX, Xe(La)TeX, along with the editors TeXShop and TeXWorks, the TeX Live Utility for managing updates, fonts and many other goodies. As MacTeX is a TeXLive distribution all binaries are generally frozen for a year. TeX Live Utility worked fine until I reinstalled the Tex Live Manager (I reinstalled it for testing purposes). TeX Live Manager will resume working if I change the permissions as described above. I run TeX Live Utility on El Capitan, Sierra, and High Sierra but see this problem only on High Sierra. Moreover, I have not changed umask. It will also take several days to be able update an existing TL2016 (either from the tlpretest or lucky download) with files that have changed since the TeX Live pretest freeze. So PLEASE don't bother to try to update using tlmgr or TeX Live Utility (you'll need TLU 1.24 at least for TL2016 updating).
I just installed TeX Live 2008 and the Tex Live Utility on my Macbook Pro (OS X 10.5.6).I use TeX Shop and have compiled tex files without any problems, but I need some packages that I apparently weren't installed (e.g., simplemargins, and winfonts) so I went to my TeX Live Utility. As soon as I open it I get a 'Listing Failed' message where I would expect my list of packages (I get the same thing on the manage updates tab). In the list of commands that is at the bottom it says:
And that's it ... can't view packages, can't add, update ... nothin'.
Anyone know how I can fix this?
